Published by Vishwamoorthy in Electric VehiclesIndiaNews

Secretary, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), Shri S Krishnan, witnessed the launch of a 2KW DC Portable Charger developed by the Centre of Excellence at IIT Madras Research Park to boost Electric Vehicle Adoption. The official from MeitY, Smt. Sunita Verma GC (R&DE), MeitY, Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, IIT Madras, and other dignitaries were present.

Design in India will stimulate home-grown IP and accelerate the startup ecosystem, said the Secretary, emphasizing the importance of IIT Madras Research Park. The 2 KW EV charger is a significant step, designed using recycled materials. This initiative aligns with MeitY’s mission to accelerate EV adoption, reducing dependence on imported chargers.

A substantial portion of portable chargers used by OEMs is imported, limiting customisation. The 2KW charger, developed by CEET, IIT Madras, and Flowtrik Technologies with MeitY funding, addresses this issue.

It boasts >95% efficiency, can function up to 50°C, and adheres to safety standards. These chargers can adapt to battery requirements and feature IoT compatibility for real-time tracking. Power output settings are customisable for OEMs.

Successful large-scale manufacturing of these chargers can make a significant impact on the portable charger market.

Addressing the gathering, Shri S Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY said,

The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Make in India Make for the World’ can be achieved with developing more and more indigenisation of technology and taking it forward by the industry. Now, India has moved from importing Nation to exporting Nation, this type of innovation and synergy will make India a ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’.

Secretary, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), Shri S Krishnan has witnessed the launch of indigenous Technology of 2KW DC Portable Charger developed by Centre of Excellence at IIT Madras Research Park to help Boost Electric Vehicle Adoption, here today at IIT Madras.

The official from MeitY, Smt. Sunita Verma GC (R&DE),MeitY, Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, IIT Madras and other dignitaries from MeitY and IIT Madras were present on the occasion. Addressing the gathering, Shri S Krishnan said “The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Make in India Make for the World’ can be achieved with developing more and more indigenisation of technology and taking it forward by the industry.

Now, India has moved from importing Nation to exporting Nation, this type of innovation and synergy will make India a ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’.

The Secretary added that Design in India will give impetus to home-grown IP and will accelerate start-ups ecosystem in the country. He further mentioned that IIT M Research Park is now an internationally recognised brand. The Park is vibrant and effervescent constantly innovating and promoting new initiatives. The new 2 KW EV charger designed in the Park and using recycled material is an important step forward.

MeitY is very proud of being associated with this venture” The launch marks a significant step in contributing towards the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s (MeitY) mission of accelerating Electric Vehicle adoption in India, reducing the current dependence on imported charging solutions. Currently a substantial portion of portable chargers utilized by OEMs are imported and arrive pre-programmed.

Hence, they are not customizable in terms of voltage and current settings. Thermal and mechanical design play a major role in ensuring the proper functionality of the chargers. This further underlines the importance of developing Make-In-India chargers to aid in the proliferation of EVs in India.

To address this challenge and increase local manufacturing, the 2KW charger has been designed and developed by CEET, IIT Madras and industrial partner Flowtrik Technologies with funding by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology(MeitY), Govt of India. These chargers sporting an efficiency of >95% and functioning at a maximum operating ambient of 50 Degree Celsius are built with over-load, over-voltage, reverse polarity and in-built EMI/EMC filter. The chargers are designed to meet safety Standard IEC 60950-11.

Charger design also includes optional provision to communicate with battery for adaptive charging based on battery requirements and hooks for IoT to enable live tracking of charging related parameters. Power output settings can be customized based on the volume of the manufacturing to suit the requirement of individual OEMs. Successful large-scale manufacturing of this technology can significantly make difference in the portable charger market.
